Hello, this entry is different. It is completely hand typed. I type with either my thumb or a knuckle, one letter at a time. Not as fast as Dragon, but it works better. I've enrolled in a calculus course at the local community college, I have know idea how I'm going to complete the written work though. Any suggestions? I know that by not updating the blog on a regular basis, many follows quit following. Because of this, I feel like there arn't very many followers at all. If your reading this please respond, maybe I'll keep it going and update more often. Also I'm including a photo of Shilah and myself, both of us are doing great. PEACE

  1. Hey, that's awesome! I think you can handle the written work by typing just like you typed this blog entry. It may be slow, but you can definitely get the job done.

  2. My brother (also Bill) had a roommate in college who had become quadriplegic in a car accident. He had no hand or arm sensation or movement and did his homework with voice recognition and he had a scribe for in-class work. At Lakeland Community College, where I teach, the Student Resources department arranges these things. I don't really know how it works, since the one student I have with accomodations (learning disability, not physical disability) doesn't bother using them and is flirting with failing my course because of it. I also don't know what they need as far as documentation, but it shouldn't be too many hoops.

  3. Hi, Bill -- I'm a friend of sarah's who has followed this blog since 2009. Glad to hear you're going to take a class. I'm really too old for it, but I still think taking college classes is pretty much my favorite thing to do in life.

What did you hand-type this on? A regular keyboard or something like an iPad?

  4. hey bill,
like someone said before talk to the student offices that supplies tutors. maybe you can get someone to write out what you tell them, and many places will let you take exams in a separate area especially if you have to talk about it out loud. Good luck! take care summer is just around the corner with warmer weather :-)

  6. Bill contact the Learning Center at the college they will help you with accommodations Steve Anderson can also probably help point you in the right direction as he teaches there. I attend classes there also and I know they help a lot of students through there.

  7. Hi Bill, this is Sarah's sister-in-law. I took notes and made tape recordings for a student with learning disabilities when I was in college. Yes, it was UC Berkeley (the birthplace of rights & access for all abilities), but it was 20 years ago, so I'm sure most schools have accommodations now. I even borrowed an electric wheelchair from them when I was in a cast and lived a mile off campus.
Shilah is so big now, and still cute!

  8. Bill,

Contact Patti Zakowski at the college. She is the Disabilities Coordinator and I have called her and given her a heads up. Patti is a great gal and you will like her. Her number is: 740-568-1913 ext. 2503

You need to get on this right away. WSCC will not give you a scribe for homework like someone said, but you will be allowed to use a scribe on exams. I believe they can record the lectures for you, however.

Typing calculus can be problematic so you need to get on this right away as well. I believe you are taking a class with Edwards - do you remember him? You two will like each other - ask him if he is using MyMathLab - some calculus classes do . . . as I recall, he does not seem like the type.

If you are looking for more communication with others, you might want to consider using facebook. It is more two-way communication than a blog. The blog was great when Sarah was keeping us all up-to-date on your progress, but Facebook is much more interactive and will connect you with a lot more people!

Glad you are typing - Dragon has its place but typing is good, too!

  9. Bill,

Me and my family check on the blog on a regular basis. I know I check on it almost daily to see if there are any updates. Although we are neighbors we are still interested in what is happening with you through this medium.

I am glad to hear you are enrolled in the calculus class. The human spirit always has the need and desire to accomplish - so go for it! Certainly mastering calculus is an accomplishment. Don't ask me to help if you have trouble with calculus - I'm still working on addition and subtraction.

The sun is getting ready to shine, grass grow, flowers bloom and the birds to sing. It's been a long, cold, grey winter and warmth and sunshine will brighten everyones mood. Keep posting - we enjoy following along!

  10. Hey Bill,

I subscribe to your blog via RSS, so I always see it. Although I have a really hard time trying to get my comments to appear, so I usually don't comment at all.

Thanks for the update - I know my family reads it!

  13. Billy,

It is great to read about how you're doing. Of course you can do the course work you've chosen. Just set you mind to it. You have done tougher things in your life. It's good to hear that your health is doing well. We are all looking forward to the Spring and warmer weather for sure. It will make it easier on all of us. You're right the heating bills can certainly take a big bite out of the finances.

Think about you often and hope to keep checking back on here to see how you're doing. Keep blogging!
